Picture Perfect

I love taking pictures of my little one. So does Greg. We have so many pictures. It is a little crazy. They are taking over our computer memory and they are taking over my phone. We need to delete some. Why is it so hard to delete them? I mean, I can't even delete the bad ones. Why do I still have these? I clearly have a problem.

No more pictures.

I'm serious, no more.

It is getting old.

I need a way to organize pictures. By age/date? By event? I think we just need to go through and just start deleting some and just keep the really good ones. Any tips on picture organization??

From the beginning I organized pictures of Jake by age/date. For the first year I did "First Month", "Second Month" etc. then since then I do "May 2012". I also have each of those in a folder for each year. "First Year", "Second Year", etc. It works well and I can find pictures I'm looking for pretty easily as long as I know generally when something happened.

Hey Jana! I love Cambry's photos too! Especially the last one in this post. =) As far as photo mgmt, as soon as I upload my photos from my camera I look through them and delete the duplicates (I'm trigger happy). But besides that I use an external hard drive to back up all the photos so they don't take over my computer! You can get them for super cheap now.

I do a folder for each year and within those folders, I do a folder for each month. The photos are named May 2012 ### and it makes it super easy to find what you are looking for. If you organize it by her age, you may find it difficult when you have subsequent kids :) I also use an external hard drive as a back up and for anything older than 2007 (I delete the oldest years off my computer as I run out of room) when I delete them off my computer, I burn a disc first just to always have at least two copies

I have tried everything and I now just organize them by month and year (May 2012). I keep every picture - I upload them to an external hard drive and then I also upload them to Shutterfly. I do both in case something happens to my hard drive. I actually had a hard drive break and the only way I got my pictures back was having Shutterfly download them to a CD for me. Otherwise they would have been lost forever.

Thanks for all the tips! We do have an external hard drive (although it has been a while since we backed up everything) but sounds like we should save it another way as well, just in case. And it seems like by year and month is the way to go. All good advice!

We do the same with the month and year organization and external hard drive. I am with you, IMPOSSIBLE to delete pictures:) Each one, even the bad ones shows a dimension of her personality:))) I LOVE all the pics of her! She is beautiful and I love getting to "know" her even from so far away!!!

The most important thing I think is to make sure they are backed up somewhere online. If someone broke into your home, or there was a fire or something, even an external harddrive could be gone. There are sites that will automatically scan your comp and save all photos and everything as you upload them in cyberspace that you can easily access. We did this right before my laptop crashed last year, thankfully!
